N_St_Murals_Project - March 7th, 2016

Art Whino teams up with The JBG Companies for the creation of the N Street Mural Project within the NoMa neighborhood. The projects mission is to activate a block on N Street using Murals as the primary vehicle for activation.

JBG, known for its place-making expertise, was inspired by the place-making efforts of the NoMa BID, led by Robin Eve Jasper, wanted to respond to her desire to activate and improve spaces prior to their redevelopment. JBG was also inspired by the DC Arts and Humanities project, 5x5, a temporary art project that is currently in place throughout the city.

Art Whino with its arsenal of artists carefully chose three distinct artists with a shared style of geometry as their form of expression. The decision of using muralists with more geometrical styles was in response to the location of the murals which are more unconventional rather than flat continuous surfaces. The three locations are all within a block of each other so that the viewer can walk and experience all three awe inspiring locations. Each location is unique from the two-story courtyard feeling near Rubin’s murals, to the three-sided, four-story building wrap of Kyle Hughes Odgers, to the mammoth eight-story, two-sided mural. One of these activations would change a community but to have three along a block will surely change N Street and NoMa to an art lover’s destination.
