I have always been fascinated by the past, from listening to jazz, blues, and gospel of the early 1900’s to reminiscing about my childhood in the 1980’s. It reminds me how much – and how little – things have changed. Yet these contributions of yesterday are too easily overlooked amidst the commotion of today. Through my work I give a second life to discarded mementos of past eras. I take objects that have spent decades out of view and rework them so they are no longer just forgotten ephemera. Matchbooks advertising bygone hotels and restaurants, postcards and maps showing places as they once were, and letters sent long ago are just some of the components that form my collages. Each collage is meant to be viewed as a whole as well as piece by piece so that the viewer can recall – or imagine – times that have long since gone.
